The US Army chief, Gen. Randy George, offered an intriguing possible win for AUKUS Pillar 2: "a common controller" for unmanned systems, allowing the three allies to exchange systems.
“We think they [Russian army] have a [reconnaissance strike] response time that sits between three and six minutes at the moment, and it's getting better over time,” said a senior UK military official.
“The Challenger 3 program will deliver the best tank in NATO ... and deliver a network enabled, digital main battle tank, providing the soldier with a step changing capability," said Rory Breen, strategy and future business director at RBSL.
Despite the UK MoD not signing off on any orders for the latest drone package, aircraft likely to be under consideration are smaller size systems, particularly soldier portable or “over the hill” drones similar to Teledyne FLIR Black Hornets, one analyst said.
“This evidence will further inform the concept of recce-strike at all levels as outlined in the Land Operating Concept; urban operations doctrine development and human-machine teaming, while also acting as a technology horizon-scanning tool,” said a British Army spokesperson
“I think once we get towards the end of next year, and they [the MoD] really do have the system in their hands, that will to be the timeframe where they're really able to nail down what those [production] requirements are," said Nicole Roberts, programme manager for high energy laser weapons at Raytheon.
The latest munitions package is in line with the British Army's wider ambition of undertaking an extensive modernisation campaign based on a budget of £41 billion ($51 billion) over 10 years.
BAE Systems will be supported at an industrial level by US firms L3 Harris and KBR, an engineering company headquartered in Texas.
In its new paper, the British Ministry of Defence is “trying to make a virtue of fundamental and structural weaknesses” associated with spending and equipment problems, analyst Joshua Huminski told Breaking Defense.
"We should treat many of these lessons with caution; one wonders what shape we would be in if, in the first few days after the Russian invasion, we had sold off our armor to invest in [Turkish made Bayraktar] TB2 or one-way attack drones," said Gen. Patrick Sanders, British Army Chief of the General Staff.
The tests are a step toward “what could potentially be achieved on the battlefield with crewless vehicles in the next 10, 20 or 30 years,” said Lt. Col. James de St John-Pryce, commanding officer of the British Army's Armoured Trials and Development Unit.
